Artist Statement

"Art washes from the soul, the dust from everyday life."   Pablo Picasso

I begin this statement with one of my favorite quotes for I believe it best describes the presence of art in my life and my need to create.  For me, the creative process is the sum of past experiences, the people I am closest to, and the hopes and fantasies I have for the future.

My work consists primarily of 2-D mixed media combining the pure intensity of pastels layered with the rich textures of handmade papers.  The forms begin with a memory, an experience or just an intention and evolve into a blending of geometric and organic shapes.

In addition to making art, I am a retired art teacher and have a master's degree in the field of art therapy.  The marriage of these three elements has given an added dimension to the purpose of my work.  Being able to witness children working and learning about art reawakened my love for various media and techniques, while the therapeutic skills have deepened my own personal awareness and the spirit that connects me to my creative process.

This year marks my 44th year exhibiting at art festivals and in galleries.  making art has grown from a hobby into a way of life for me and it is my honor to share it with you.
